Food is NOT the Problem in Your Food Allergy
Food is NOT the Problem in Your Food Allergy
“The food is not the problem with your food allergy or intolerance. The difference is in the details.”
- Dr. Alexis
Hey there, fellow food allergy warrior! Let's dive into a vital truth: when it comes to your food allergy or intolerance, the food itself isn't the villain.
I know you're probably thinking, "What the heck? Obviously, the food is the problem." But let me explain. You’ve probably heard the phrase, "the devil is in the details," which I tweak to "the difference is in the details." Yeah, the possibilities are in the details.
So what do I mean exactly?
To illustrate this, let me share a story I lovingly call the Bleach Story.
I was sitting with a friend of mine who has an avocado allergy. We were just talking casually and discussing how I work with clients to help them conquer their food allergies. She was focused on the avocado as the problem.
I said, think about it like this: If there was an avocado sitting in front of us, and we cut it in half—one half for each of us. If she took a bite out of her half and I took a bite out of mine, she would likely have a reaction because she’s allergic to avocado. I, on the other hand, don’t have an allergy, so I wouldn’t have a reaction.
The Core Question
So, is it really the food in its entirety that's the problem, or is the difference in the details? Is it a quality within that food matched with the person who’s taking it in? The dynamics between the food quality and the person might be part of the problem.
We continued the conversation, digging deeper into whether it’s the food itself or certain characteristics of the food. Then, I brought up a more extreme example.
The Bleach Example
If we had a cup of bleach and split it between us, and we both took a sip, what would likely happen? We would both get sick because bleach is not supposed to be in our bodies in any way, shape, or form.
The entirety of the bleach would be the problem. Contrast this with the avocado. If it were solely the food being the problem, then both of us should technically have a reaction. But we don’t. This suggests that part of the food could be the problem, but not the food in its entirety.
That's the essence of Food Clues—understanding and knowing the characteristics of foods, how they're supposed to react in the body, and identifying mismatches.
Identifying Food Clues
When there’s a dysfunction or an abnormal reaction in the body, it’s a clue. The dynamics of that reaction give us information about what may be going on inside you that might need support. It's not necessarily the food or its characteristic that’s the problem. It's that once the characteristic gets inside, it causes some disarray and gives us insight into what may need to be resolved.
That’s essentially my Bleach Story. It offers a perspective on how the food may not be the complete problem. Sometimes it’s about a characteristic of the food and taking it a step further—a characteristic mismatch with the body or difficulty in handling that particular characteristic.
